Local Charity Set to Deliver Breast Cancer Body Confidence Wellbeing Events Across NI this April

This month, Cancer Focus NI will run a series of Breast Cancer Body Confidence Events in Belfast, Ballymena, and Enniskillen to meet the demand for support from local women. Funded by the Pink Ribbon Foundation, the wellbeing event will give up to thirty women per event an opportunity to connect with breast cancer specialists for a day exploring body acceptance, self-esteem, and practical strategies for coping with treatment side effects.

The decision comes on the back of feedback from clients who use the charity’s bra and swimwear fitting service raising concerns around body image after cancer treatment. In response, the planned body confidence wellbeing events will bring a wealth of expertise and support directly to local communities with the aim of supporting women on a breast cancer journey.

The events will explore themes of self-care, mindfulness practice, body confidence, and peer support. The first will take place on Thursday 16 April from 10am to 2.30pm at the charity’s Fermanagh Cancer Support Centre located at 18 High Street, Enniskillen. Subsequent events will take place in Ballymena on Thursday 23 April, 10am-2.30pm (Leighinmohr Hotel) and Belfast on Thursday 30 April, 10am-2.30pm (Newforge Sports and Event Hub Centre). Tea and coffee on arrival and lunch will be provided for all attendees.

Speaking about the need for such events, Emma Wilson, Bra Fitting Coordinator at Cancer Focus NI, explained: “I hear from local women during their bra and swimwear fitting consultation about how breast cancer has impacted their wellbeing and body confidence. Some patients have even felt unable to look at their scars. My job is to explain that this is a perfectly normal response to treatment and surgery. To remind ladies that they can wear and access pretty and feminine bras. I’ve seen tears of pain turn into tears of joy as women see their strong and beautiful selves return in the mirror. A personal and private experience that continually humbles me.”

 Emma continued:

“I am absolutely delighted to see the development and delivery of three specialist breast cancer body confidence events. These wellbeing events will give an opportunity for women, who alongside a cancer diagnosis are juggling the demands of life, to rediscover confidence all while embracing their strength and receiving the support needed to help write the next chapter of their lives.”
